a solid improvement

A family in Ushaw Moor is urging others to ‘take the plunge’ after switching from solid fuel to gas heating.

Angela and Anthony Scott have been loyal to solid fuel for 20 years but have now switched to gas and are so happy with the results they’d recommend others to follow in their footsteps. The family have been using their coal-fired heating in their semi-detached home since they moved to the north east and had previously avoided opportunities to switch.

They have persevered with coal costs of £300 a month in the winter and difficulties with keeping the home clean as a result of the fuel for two decades. The coal fired heating system had actually been one of the reasons the Scott’s had chosen their home at the time.

“We moved from a private landlord property where we’d had problems with the gas heating. Said Anthony. “But we’ve both got mobility issues so we were having real problems keeping on top of the coal boiler.”

After several calls and visits from heating engineers at believe housing, they were convinced that the time was right to change their heating system.

Simon Wilkinson, Gas Team Leader at believe housing, said: “We only have a relatively small number of solid fuel heating systems left in our homes now. Getting spare parts is becoming more and more difficult, and gas heating systems are vastly more efficient and cheaper to run for our customers. That’s without even mentioning the environmental benefits of switching from coal.

“We spent a long time speaking to Angela and Anthony about the change to gas, and the work that would be involved. I can understand why they were nervous after using solid fuel for so long, but they’re already starting to see some of the benefits.”

The work was carried out in-house by believe housing’s repairs and maintenance teams. The work took just two days to complete.

“We knew it would be an upheaval.” Said Angela. “But we thought we’ll have to take the plunge. There wasn’t much mess. We’ve had a couple of teething problems, but they were sorted out quickly.”

The family are already saving money compared to their solid fuel costs but are looking at getting a smart meter fitted to their home to make even more savings. “If anyone else is struggling like we were, I’d recommend to go for it.” Added Angela.
